LANCASTER CENTRE TAKES OFF

A new community centre was opened in Cambourne last night.

The Lancaster Centre will serve as a temporary meeting place for community groups until the permanent community centre for the village is completed at the end of 2004.

The Cambourne Consortium have donated the use of the building, which was formerly used as a sales and information office by the developers of Cambourne. South Cambridgeshire District has given a grant for £2,000 to pay for insurance and running costs of the hall. Councillor Daphne Spink, leader of South Cambridgeshire District Council and David Chare, project director for the consortium, opened the centre.

Councillor Daphne Spink, said, "We are pleased to be working in partnership with the Cambourne Consortium to provide much-needed community facilities for Cambourne residents. And, of course we look forward to opening a permanent community centre at the end of the year."

Groups using the centre include the Pre-School Playgroup and the village's Management Liaison Committee - forerunner to a parish council.

The first big event to be held in the centre will be the Pre-School Playgroup Open Day on Sunday 9 May between 11am and 3pm. This will be an opportunity for parents and children find out more about what's on offer. Tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks will be provided.

Staff are required to help run the new group. If you have childcare qualifications or skills why not go along to the Open Day to find out more? There are vacancies for a supervisor (this position requires NVQ Level 3 in early years education), a deputy supervisor (this position requires someone with or working towards NVQ Level 2 in early years education) and play assistants. This would initially be from 9am-12noon, five mornings a week.
