CYCLING TO CAMBRIDGE
Cycling to Cambridge shouldn't be too hard, even if the A428 is involved. The return home will be more of a(n uphill) struggle.

If you want a reasonably quick, direct route then using the old bit of the A428 is available.

Hardwick has a cycle lane painted on both sides of the road

Off road Cycle lane through from Hardwick to Madingly Hill,

There is a new off road cycle lane on Madingley Hill, involves crossing the road at the bottom of the hill.

If you have a mountain bike and a little more time then try the Harcamlow Way - from central Cambridge head through the "Backs" accross Queens Road up past the Cavendish Labs to Coton (tarmaced cycle route), continue west out of Coton along a gravel track, then along fairly rough bridleways until you reach Bourn. Go about 1km north along the main road until you reach a track on the left - sign saying "No access to Cambourne", not sure if the sign is still there).

Head up the track and you'll find yourself in the SE corner of Cambourne. Quite a nice ride if you're into off-road stuff, but allow at least 90 minutes. The route's obvious enough if you look it up on a map.

Someone cycles to the Science Park every day from Cambourne - rain or shine. Here's the secret bit - there is a path that goes from near the Vine School through to the Broadway from Bourn - have a look at this: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=193857 not sure exactly where it connects up with Cambourne on the map because new roads have been put in but it's fairly obvious. Cycle past the Ark and follow the sign for the Vine School - the road bends round to the right but the path carries straight on. It's passable by mountain bike or racer. The path brings you out onto the Broadway and you then get on the cycle path along the A428. Shoot off onto the Hardwick backroad and then to Madingley road. I found cycling in town more scary than the A428 - stay on the road and get cut up by cars and buses or go on the cycle paths and dodge people coming out of their drives and kerbs - take your pick... #
