CRIER FEBRUARY and THE ICE RINK
Ben has responded to my January letter, and my reply is as follows :-

Ben is still under the impression that a swimming pool is an option rather than an ice rink.

The main benefactor for the ice rink left money for an ice rink, it cannot be used for a pool.

It may be true that one day, that some form of swimming pool could be considered. Unfortunately a Village College, is not proposed, I imagine other villages have managed to get one as part of that facility.

The District Council do not fully fund any other swimming pool in South Cambs. Our best bet may be to accept that if successful this venture could provide one eventually, or it may be more viable if Cambourne (dare I say it) grows in size, but that has other social disadvantages, especially if the developer gets their way and dramatically increases densities as they are proposing.

I personally don't have a problem with additional villages adjacent to Cambourne providing that the transport infrastructure is improved and of course the amenities required for such a scheme are provided.

I heard a rumour that the old railway line radio telescope is basically obsolete and may not be needed in a few years time. Could not any growth of Cambourne be linked to a train service using that route ?

More homes on Bourn airfield seem eminently preferable to the constant drone of small planes that seem to be the case at the moment.

The comment about attracting boy racers in their Vauxhall Novas is always a possibility, unfortunately we already have them anyway.

We have been assured that CCTV will be used to keep an eye out for any problems and may actually help in general.

We are likely to attract undesirable behaviour, and if the youth do not have something to do, we may actually be a source of problems.

Just ask anyone in Bourn about the behaviour in their village and in the village of Sawston. Sawston has around 3000 homes too.

The proposal also provides other facilities which should provide something for all youth to participate in, having a 30% bigger general sports hall than anticipated with a fully sprung floor, the squash courts will also be built to a higher standard. And other usable areas too.

Any other operator of a small village sports hall would have to make a significant profit.

How many Ice rinks have you come across that are run by a registered charity ?

This should ensure that it is not overpriced as it will not need to make large profits

Residents will also have equal representation with other groups by being trustees.

Hopefully Ben will come out from his anonymity and come along to a meeting of the CRA and express his views.

Its a shame that there are not many other residents views in the Crier.
