Thanks to all those residents who were diverted for this event, apart from one resident ?? (so he claimed) - demanding to drive through the event twice, driving a small truck, on his second excursion he had a load of furniture, so hopefully he is moving a long way away. I might get some FLACK for that

Cambourne Roller Marathon, Sunday October 5th 2003

On Sunday 5th October, skaters from far and wide (Suffolk, London, Hertfordshire) came together to skate a half marathon round Cambourne and since the day had dawned bright and fresh, the lovely weather brought many people out to compete. Despite expecting a fair few competitors because of the weather, the organisers were very surprised at the turn out. Not many of the entrants had done anything like it before. One entire family entered: John Moore and his wife Janice, and their daughters Tina, 11, and Ellie, 8.

With the roads swept clear and closed to the public, the mini marathon for the young children among us kicked off at 1 'o' clock and the kids raced off to complete one or two laps of the half mile track.

Well done to Marie Sato who came first, after falling twice, once on each lap and getting back up again!

The youngest competitor, Amelia Luck, ended the race after completing half a mile and everybody cheered.

The main event began at 1:30 when 61 participants made their way to the start line. The start was fast, but by the time the skaters got to the bottom of the first straight, the wind hit them and it was obvious that the remainder of the race was going to be tough.

After twenty-seven difficult laps for most people, first place was Daniel Blowes from Chesterton with a time of 53 minutes 41 seconds, second place was Alice Dobell from Milton Keynes in 59 minutes 23 seconds, third was Claire Cooper from Beccles, Suffolk who completed the 27 laps in 60 minutes 50 seconds and fourth was Suzu Sato from Mill Hill, London in 63 minutes 17 seconds.

Many people finished soon after the first four and each and every competitor made a great effort.

It was a very successful event, which we hope can become an annual affair, although sponsorship will be needed in the long term.

Great day, great sport and a great turnout, well done everyone, hope to see you next year!
