THE SECOND CAMBOURNE ROLLER SKATING HALF MARATHON

A gruelling 27 laps around the High St, Sackville Way and Back Lane, around an hour of skating at a furious pace for most.

There was certainly no sign of any lack of exercise by these young people that the Government claims to worry about !

The weather held right until the very end when torrential rain had competitors heading to the Ark for shelter.

The Red Cross only treated one skater for exhaustion.

the Thursday @ 5 pm skating sessions continue in Morrisons car park - open to all

Thanks to all those residents who were slightly inconvenienced by this event, it was good to see some nearby residents sitting outside and offering support to the skaters.

This event relies on being able to close roads and the skaters have great difficulty finding venues. There are no purpose built courses, perhaps we could perusade a future car park at the business park to provide an off road course.
There will be a much shorter roller blade path around the new Skate park area which is progressing well.

Rollerthon could be a regular attraction

A ROLLER marathon held at one of Cambridgeshire's newest settlements looks set to become an annual event.

The second thrills and spills roller marathon took place on the streets of Cambourne last month and due to its success it could soon become a permanent fixture on the settlement's events calendar.

The aim of the race is to complete as many laps of the course as possible in 45 minutes - with the person who completes the most laps being crowned the winner.

A total of 71 competitors from as far away as Cheltenham, as well as from all over East Anglia took part in the race. It was won by Andy Poulter from Leicester. He and five other competitors completed 27 laps of the course within the time - equivalent to 13 miles.

Malcolm Chapman, from the Federation on In-Line Speed Skating and East Region Roller Speed Association, who organised the event, said: "We were thrilled with the turn-out. People came from as far away as Leicester, Cheltenham and Milton Keynes to participate in the rollerthon. We even had a young lad of 12 along who is competing in the European Championships in Spain later this summer.

"It was a really impressive sight to see the skaters powering through the streets with the crowd all waving and cheering encouragement. There were smiles all round and it was a brilliant day for everyone."
