Busway Experience

Sunday 7th August 2011

The first day of the guided bus, a last minute decision saw us leave Cambourne heading for St Ives to try and sample the just opened guided bus.

The Sunday service as we found out is hourly but with 2 operators should be more frequent.
We left Cambourne soon after 10am arriving at the St Ives Park and Ride park at 10-35am - having just missed a bus (it was leaving as we arrived).

The next scheduled bus to Cambridge was a Stagecoach at 11-03 and there were quite a few people buying tickets
We have pensioner bus passes so did not have to buy a ticket.

Just before 11 am a whippet bus turned up (they were putting on extra buses for the long awaited opening day).
We got on the bus but those who had bought Stagecoach tickets were unable to get on.

Our journey in to Cambridge was quick as it gets, the bus can travel at 57mph and on a Sunday no traffic.
Flags and bunting and waving onlookers made the journey a bit of fun.

We arrived in Drummer Street at about 11-30am and looked at a quick return which as it happened was another Whippet bus in 10 minutes.
We got on the bus and headed back to St Ives arriving at 12-15pm.
Perhaps we were the first return passengers??

A drive back to Cambourne and Sunday roast at the Monkfield arms at 12-35pm.

An interesting morning with little effort - ideal for me at the moment

  • A guided busway just what we need in Cambourne anyone got £180 million to spare?
