RESIDENTS in Cambourne are angry after learning that a canopy which was a gift to the community has been binned as a result of developers delays. The Cambourne Business Park gave the canopy, which was originally above its entrance, to residents so they could use it as a shelter. The developers, Cambourne Consortium, stepped in and offered to erect the canopy for residents last year but nothing more was heard about it for several months. After residents raised questions at a meeting with developers last month it emerged that the £20,000 canopy's steel structure had been disposed of by contractors. Roger Hume, vice-chair of Cambourne Management Liaison committee, said: "We were quite stunned. The gift wasn't for them it was for us. "If the developers weren't going to do anything with it they should at least have looked after it and given it back to us . "The idea we had was to put it in the country park as a shelter for people if it rains and we could hold events in it. It was a gift from the business park because they no longer needed it and they thought we could use it. "The developers didn't want to put it up in the first place because unless it's something that sells houses then they don't bother." David Chare, from the Cambourne Consortium: said: "During a Management Liaison Committee meeting some while ago residents asked if the canopy could be erected in the Cambourne Country Park. "We agreed to erect the canopy subject to its availability and the foundations required. Upon further investigation, we have found that the canopy was only ever built for temporary use, therefore is not structurally safe. "The safety of the Cambourne residents is of utmost importance, and we don't want to put residents at risk." SOURCE CAMBRIDGE EVENING NEWS 14TH MARCH 2003 SO THE DEVELOPERS HAVE OUR SAFETY AT HEART ?
