Council determined to block extra homes bid

Published on 02 October 2003 Cambridge Evening News

PLANS to build 1,600 more homes in Cambourne have been firmly rejected by councillors.

The proposals caused heated debate at a South Cambridgeshire District Council planning meeting yesterday, with widespread criticism of the scheme.

Developers, Cambourne Collaboration, want to build another 1,559 properties despite the village having already reached its planned capacity of 3,300.

In May they had a bid to put up 1,744 homes blocked by the council, but before a formal refusal notice could be issued, they put in this fresh plan.

Coun Daphne Spink, leader of the council, said: "We won't be worn down by developers. This plan is going against what we have told the incoming residents and would cause building in Cambourne for many more years.

"We have to take a stand on this, a very firm stand."
