IF YOU WANT ME TO PUBLISH RESPONSES THAT YOU HAVE HAD FROM BUILDERS (AS A RESULT OF WIND DAMAGE) EMAIL ME WITH PERMISSION

23rd March 2004
Guess what I lost my Garage roof again and once again Bovis didn't want to know !
Have you got a contact name or email for the person who posted this message ?
I would really like to talk with him
DAVID,
I HAVE FORWARDED THIS EMAIL TO YOU AS IT SEEMS WE ARE HEADING DOWN THE SAME ROAD THAT OCCURRED AFTER THE LAST HIGH WINDS I.E. THE DEVELOPERS TRYING TO BROWBEAT RESIDENTS INTO MAKING INSURANCE CLAIMS RATHER THAN RECTIFYING THEMSELVES. THIS SEEMS PARTICULARLY MEAN-SPIRITED WHEN THE HOUSES ARE WITHIN NHBC FOR OTHER ITEMS. MOREOVER, THE ISSUE OF THE GREY SLATES IN PARTICULAR HAS BEEN WELL-DOCUMENTED AND ,I BELIEVE, PRECEDENTS WERE SET IN JEAVONS LANE EARLIER THIS YEAR.
IS THERE ANY ASSISTANCE YOU CAN OFFER OR ANYONE YOU CAN LEAN ON TO BRING ABOUT A MORE AMICABLE RESOLUTION ?

WE LIVE IN LOWER CAMBOURNE AND HAVE LOST A LARGE NUMBER OF TILES FROM OUR GARAGE ROOF AND HOUSE ONCE AGAIN THEY WERE THE SLATE EFFECT. OUR TILES WERE SMASHING ALL ROUND OUR NEIGHBOURS PROPERTY AND COULD HAVE CAUSED SERIOUS INJURY. BOVIS HAS REFUSED TO RECTIFY THE DAMAGE AND WE ARE NOW FORCED TO PURSUE IT THROUGH THE HOUSE INSURANCE. THE COST WILL EXCEED £1000 AND IS NOT REALLY WHAT YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN ON A A HOUSE LESS THAN A YEAR OLD

JUST A NOTE TO THE KEEP YOU UPDATED ON OUR ROOF.
THE THIRD TIME WE HAD DAMAGE TO OUR ROOF, (LAST FEBRUARY), WE COMPLAINED TO THE NHBC. THEIR REPORT STATED THAT THE ROOF TILES WERE NOT FIXED ACCORDING TO THE NHBC'S BUILDING STANDARDS AND THEY ORDERED THE BUILDER TO SORT THE ROOF PROPERLY. THIS WORK IS STILL ON-GOING, AND HAS TAKEN OVER 6 MONTHS SO FAR. THEY HAVE FINISHED THE HOUSE ROOF, BUT WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE GARAGE ROOF TO BE FIXED.
THE BUILDERS ROOFING CONTRACTORS CONTACTED REDLAND, WHO ARE THE TILE MANUFACTURER, AND THEY TOLD THE CONTRACTOR TO USE THEIR DRY FIXING METHOD. AMAZINGLY, THIS TIME OUR HOUSE ROOF SUFFERED NO DAMAGE IN THE WINDS - JUST AS IT SHOULD BE!
WE WILL BE PURSUING COMPENSATION FOR THE EXPENSE WE HAVE HAD FOR ALL OUR PREVIOUS INSURANCE COST INCREASES AND THE INDEPENDENT SURVEY WE HAD DONE DIRECTLY FROM THE BUILDERS SO UNTIL THIS IS RESOLVED IT IS PROBABLY NOT A GOOD IDEA TO PUBLICIZE THIS EMAIL WITH A NAME.

HI ROGER
OUR ROOF TILES REMAINED IN PLACE THIS TIME ALTHOUGH PLENTY OF TILES FROM ADJOINING ROOFS CAME OFF. BOVIS NEVER REPAIRED ANY TILES YET THEY SPENT A FEW HUNDRED POUNDS IN HIRING A CHERRY PICKER FOR THE NHBC INSPECTION. EVEN THEN THEY COULD NOT INSPECT THE ROOF TILES TO THE REAR BUT ASSUMED THAT THE FRONT WAS INDICATIVE OF WHAT WOULD BE FOUND ON THE OTHER SIDE. WHAT I BELIEVE IS THAT THE SLATE USED IS NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE IN THIS AREA AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT ROOFS THE OTHER RESIDENTS HAVE THAT HAVE LOST ROOF TILES. HAVING SPOKEN TO MY NEIGHBOURS WE WILL BE GETTING TOGETHER TO CONFRONT BOVIS AS A GROUP RATHER THAN INDIVIDUALS. BY ALL MEANS FORWARD MY DETAILS ON FOR OTHERS TO CONTACT IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO MAKE CONTACT.

Hi Roger,
Our roof lost 1 piece of guttering and 4 tiles in the high winds recently. I've just been onto the builders (David Wilson Homes) and they are going to repair all the lost tiles and guttering free of charge!! They are just trying to get hold of a cherry picker.
I think it could have something to do with the fact that the bottom photo on your damage page is directly opposite their showroom!!

I live in the Fairclough Homes site in Papworth (Blyton Road). Our houses are just 3 years old and in the most recent winds, it was only the houses with the slate effect tiles that were damaged most severely.
In most cases the slates flew some distance - usually into other peoples property (including my car).
I have tried the insurance company route and they state that unless I can show negligence - which is very unlikely - I have to claim from my own car insurance, which as I am sure you agree hikes up the premiums year after years even with a protected no claims bonus.
I was just interested in the well documented slate issue you refer to. Is there any information you have which might assist?
Many thanks

I've been looking at the comments from other people on the web site about losing roof tiles in the storm. I lost one grey cylindrical ridge tile from my garage roof in Lower Cambourne and Bovis refused to replace it. They gave me the number of Steadfast Roofing, who quoted a price of 150 pounds to supply and fit a new tile, which seems rather excessive especially as they would be coming to Cambourne anyway to fix other roofs (my insurance excess is 150 so I can't claim it). Do you think I should pursue Bovis over it or just pay Steadfast to fix it? thanks,

I would suggest a notice in your window/front "Don't buy a bovis home" roof problems I have found this to be effective in the past especially when you are near the show homes. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but it is quite unreasonable to buy a new home covered by a 2 year warranty and the roof won't stay on. Most of the problems seem to be caused by the lightweight mock slate tiles, they vibrate and cause ridge tiles to come off. David Wilson are fixing all their "problems" free.
