SPORTS CENTRE STATEMENT

Unfortunately, the funding to build the long awaited sports centre in Cambourne was withdrawn by the banks at the end of 2008, despite protracted efforts by everyone involved.

This is not a reflection on Cambourne, the consortium of developers – Taylor Wimpey and Bovis Homes - or the proposed managers of the sports centre Leisure Connection, but merely a symptom of the current difficult economic climate.

Since it became obvious the funding was not going to be available from that source, the Consortium has been working tirelessly to secure alternative funding with the support of Cambourne Parish Council and South Cambs District Council.

We are now investigating a number of options which remain open to us including alternative investment streams. Given the number of avenues we are exploring I remain hopeful that we will be able to progress the development of, what I have always been confident will be, superb additional sporting facilities for Cambourne.

Everyone is still working to the current deadline of December 2009 for the opening of Cambourne’s sports centre but, being realistic, that may need to be moved back into 2010. Any necessary movement on that deadline will be discussed fully and frankly with all those involved.

I remain very grateful for the support and understanding that both the parish and district councils have offered in the circumstances.
