Cambourne Men’s Shed
An initiative to establish a Men’s Shed in Cambourne is progressing, supported by Cambourne Town Council.
What are Men’s Sheds
Men’s Sheds are community-based organisations typically established and operated by local volunteers.
They are spaces where men with ‘time on their hands’ come to meet and take part in fun, practical and social activities in friendly environment.
Sheds typically have three core features:
> A practical space where members can take part in activities such as woodwork, metalwork, furniture restoration, upcycling or gardening.
> A social space where members can relax, grab a cuppa and chat to others.
> An inclusive and friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome and supported. Sheds often start off small with a few activities and build up their range overtime as their membership and skills base grow.
> Sheds enable members to work on both personal and group projects.
About Cambourne Men’s Shed
> The Shed was established at an inaugural AGM held end of November 2022 at which a committee was elected and a constitution agreed.
> Initial Shed meetings are likely to be BYOT (Bring Your Own Tools) and the first few meetings may just be a gathering for tea/coffee and to consider what kind of projects members would like to undertake (indoor or outdoor).
> The Hub Community Centre Meeting Room will be used as an initial location for meetings/activities.
> Members will need to decide on the frequency and timing of meetings.
> A further meeting is planned in May 2023 with interested parties with the aim of starting regular Shed meetings as soon as possible.
Amongst the next steps is to visit other Men’s Sheds in the local area (Shed’s have been established in Bar Hill, St Neots, Madingley and Histon), to learn from their experiences, and decide what projects to undertake when Shed meetings begin in Cambourne.
